The Palm | Jute Magazine

So excited to finally see and share these photos with the world! We've been waiting a while for these to get picked up and published and wa lah! Here it is!

I picked up these two wigs a while ago on a random hair shopping trip with no idea what to do with them. I thought they were so cute and wanted to add them in my wig collection.

When Brian and I decided to collaborate I wanted to put these babies to good use. We came up with a corky concept inspired by Hitchcock's Bird meets a Cohen brothers film. Naturally, when we decided to make this shoot happen in Palm Springs, we had to give a little Sinatra vibe.  This was such an amazing and fun shoot, we had the best crew and most amazing memories from this weekend.

Hair Talk: For the wigs, they're synthetic, and most synthetic wigs come looking so shiny and halloween looking. Now, I didn't mind the wigs to look wiggy, that was part of the whole corky concept. BUT I wanted to add my deconstructed touch to it so I sprayed it with lots of cheap drug store dry shampoo (You know, the ones that you cant use on yourself or any brunette because it makes you look like you have gnarly dandruff), back combed, and picked it out the curls with a wide tooth comb until I broke down 50% of the curls. Once that is done, I sculpted the wig to the shape I wanted and sprayed it with a hard holding hair spray like Paul Mitchell's Extra Body Finishing Firm.

Darling Magazine

I loved working on these natural textured hair babes for the latest issue of Darling Magazine. I'm starting to see more girls rocking their natural texture these days and nothing makes me happier. Coming from someone that has slick pin straight asian hair, I find myself so obsessing over any texture, doesn't matter if its just a slight beach wave bend or a kinky curl.

A cool thing about Darling Magazine is they don't use any photoshop on their images. They celebrate women as is and show off what a real woman looks like. I especially loved working on this shoot because I got to enhance our models hair texture and not change it. How often do we get to do that in our line of work? Hardly!

On both of the girls, All I used was Rare Marula Oil to hydrate and define some of their curls. Then finish it off with Paul Mitchell's Awapuhi Shine Spray

Ryan Guzman | Bello Magazine

Such a pleasure working with this smoldering hottie! What a babe right?

1. Prep the hair with V76's Tonique spray. This helps re-activate any natural curl and helps loosen any stubborn cowlicks.

2. Lightly blow-dry hair upwards and back (especially in the front) until half way dry, I like to keep it a little damp so I can easily work product through the hair.

3. I used a dime size of V76's Natural wax and emulsified it in my hands before I applying it from scalp to ends in his hair. this product gives me pliable hold so I can re-work and mold his hair 

4. Once the initial shape is there, I used a little bit of V76's Control Balm on my fingertips to add any finishing touches to define more texture, shape the silhouette, and any finishing touches that need to be done.

Carrie Keagan | MTV Movie Awards

For Carrie’s MTV Movie red carpet look, we wanted to create something that would compliment her super sleek and cool outfit. Since the cage top was already making a statement, I didn’t want to do anything too distracting in front but still do something cool and creative so it’s not just a boring up-do.  Good thing Carrie is super open to ideas and can basically rock anything. So, I decided to create a fun twist/ braid moment in the back into a smooth voluminous pompadour in the front. 

1. First prep the entire head with Paul Mitchell's Sculpting Foam on damp hair for control and body. Round brush the top for volume and everything else can be rough dried for texture.

2. I separated the top section where I wanted to create a pompadour for later. Starting at the nape working my way to the crown, I tied pony tails in a mohawk formation to for security and to create foundations for my next steps. (This trick is such a lifesaver on clients with shorter hair and helps control the little neck hairs as well)

3. Starting fro the lowest pony tail and using a small amount of Dry Wax on my fingertips to control fly-aways, I rope braided each pony tail upwards to the next pony tail and pinned the braid in place at each “foundation” I created.  Once I get all the way up to the last pony, I finished the braid off with a regular 3 stand braid and clip it aside. 

4. Prep the section with Dry Wash and Stay Strong. Back comb the entire frontal section to create volume for the pompadour. Once you get the height desired, take a toothbrush and smooth out the front then pin the pompadour in place. 

5. With the braid created from the pony tail, expand the braid with your fingers to create a looser and bigger braid. (This will will be used to cover any pins used to spin the pompadour)

6. I created a U shape with the braid and layed it over to cover the ends and pins from the pompadour. Pin in place till it’s 100% secure.

7. Smooth away any unwanted fly-aways and secure the entire look with Extra body Finishing firm. Wah La! You’ve got yourself a do.

Carrie Keagan | Critics Choice Awards

I wanted to create something modern and youthful for Carrie’s look tonight. Her dress is very classic with a modern flair, I didn’t want to do anything over the top to take away from her gorgeous silhouette.  We decided to give her a slight bend to create texture and body for a effortless vibe and a romantic side sweep. Just something fresh, beautiful, and modern.

1. I used Rene Furterer’s Vegetal Mousse on damp hair and rough dried it keeping in mind where I want her part to be. 

2. Once completely dried, I prepped the hair with Vegetal Strong Hold Spray for flexible control and wrapped small sections of hair around a 1 inch curling iron on low heat.  Make sure to leave the ends out for a undone look.

3. Once finished I separated the waves with a large tooth hair pick to break a part the curl formation and also to create a bit of body towards the middle and ends.

4. Finish with Vegetal Texture Hair Spray and we’re all good to go!

A Current Affair

Alexandra said the magic words to any hair dresser for this A Current Affair shoot- "I think lets do something big, whatever you want" and I immediately was like a kid in a candy store.

It was so much fun playing around with texture and shapes on our model Veronica, she had the perfect face and reminded me of a baby Iman.

My secret weapons for this shoot was Nigel's matte bobby pins and Paul Mitchell's Extra Body Finishing Firm Hairspray.

Skrillex- Red Lips Music Video

This video I worked days on for Skrillex is finally out! It was such a great experience working with director Grant Singer and bringing his vision to life. 
I had so much fun creating these looks on Anya and working with such a brilliant team!

Super excited about this editorial for Elle China!

For Wylie's hair, I used Paul Mitchell's 1 inch barrel iron to set the curls, the boar bristle  brush from Leonor Greyl to brush out and smooth the waves, then finished it off with R & Co's Foil Anti- Static and Anti-Frizz Spray and Paul Mitchell's Extra Body Firm Finishing Spray to set and lock in the look.

heatless and effortless waves

When you have pin straight Asian hair like me, you have to actually put in work to create body and texture. Sometimes using a curling iron is just too time consuming.. & since I have long hair, it’s a arm workout I have no interest in participating in. 

So, I’ve been putting my hair in 2 zulu knots before I go to sleep and when I wake up in the morning, I have this “natural looking texture” that I’m kind of obsessed with. All you need is a sea salt beach spray, 2-4 bobby pins or hair pins, and a brush!

1. Brush out your hair so theres no knots and tangles, my favorite brush now is the Tangle Teezer. It detangles without tearing or breaking your hair. (when you have bleached and damaged hair, it is a life saver)
2. Prep your hair by using a sea salt spray. I personally love the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi texturizing sea spray, it’s light, smells wonderful, and doesn’t leave behind any residue. this will help it set your waves and give texture. 
3. Part your hair down the middle, and twist each section into knots around the higher crown area and secure it with bobby pins or hair pins. Try to use as few pins as you can to avoid any dents in the hair and root area. (Remember, the tighter you knot it, the tighter the curl. the looser you knot it, the looser the curl) Once you’re don’t knotting it up, just head to bed.
4. When you’re ready the next morning, unpin yourself, give the hair a little fluff with your hands and you’re all ready to go! 

Pharrell Freedom by Paul Hunter

So honored and proud to be part of such an epic project with the legendary Paul Hunter and of course the most talented and sweet Pharrell Williams. 

This music video took a whole 9 days to do and god knows how many post days. All shot around California and every scene was done with so much care and precision.

I was able to work along side Key Makeup Dina Gregg and Key Stylists Jessica and Kelly of JAK through this amazing adventure and if it wasn't for such a great team and all my beyond awesome assistants (Samantha Fryling, Mishelle Parry, Jessica Yu, Winna, and Holly), this project wouldn't be nearly as awesome! 

What a good one for memory lane.

Elle Indonesia - Tropical Vibes

Loving this editorial I worked on with photographer Alvin Nguyen!  This was the first time I worked with Alvin and it was an adventure to say the least.  We drove 3 hours away into the sand dunes to create these gorgeous shots.  Between our truck getting stuck in the middle of soft sand and the 100 mph wind that was going on, I think the images turned out pretty good. It was a rough day but so worth every minute!

Elle China April 2015- Angels in the City by Chen Man

Mae Lapres may be one of my most favorite models. It was such a blast shooting her with China's most famous photographer Chen Man for Elle China.  For this shoot we were going straight western 70's and of course Mae's round layered cut was ore than perfect for it all.

Elle Malaysia | January Issue

So in love with this editorial I worked on with photographer Alvin Nguyen for Elle Malaysia.  We travelled to Vasquez Rocks near LA for the gorgeous landscapes and view to show off all the amazing clothes fashion editor Calvin Cheong pulled.  That day was definitely one of my favorite days of work.

Alexa PenaVega at the Spare Parts Movie Premiere

Congratulations to my client and friend Alexa for her new movie Spare Parts!  I had the opportunity to do her hair for the movie premiere and we decided to give it a Rapunzel inspired fish tail braid.

Hair Talk:

I first gave Alexa a deep right side part on and wrapped random pieced around a 1 inch curling iron for texture and body. Once finished I started french braiding her hair from the right temple to the lower left nape then continued it into a fish tail.  When done braiding, I secured the braid with an elastic and pulled some pieces out by the face and the braid for a loose and lived in texture. Use bobby pins to shape and pin unwanted loose pieced and finish with Paul Mitchell's Awapuhi Finishing Hairspray to hold the look and you are good to go!

Volume For Days

Add edge to your glam hairstyle with a moto jacket and deep coral lipstick.

Step 1: Create an exaggerated side part and smooth with a shine-enhancing styling cream.

Step 2: Prep dry hair with a heat protectant and curl half-inch sections with a ¾-inch wand, making sure all curls go in the same direction.

Step 3: With a boar brush, gently comb out curls starting at the bottom and working your way to the top.

Step 4: In sections, back comb to push curls up and add fullness at the ends.

Step 5: Finish with a strong-hold hair spray and style with the headband.

Romantic Bun

Add a touch of classic polish to an ultrafeminine look with a simple button-up and deep plum lipstick.

Step 1: Create a center part and loosely curl hair outward with a 1-inch wand.

Step 2: Bring hair to the nape of the neck, secure into a loose ponytail and braid from the base to ends.

Step 3: Wrap braid around the base of the ponytail and pin in place.

Step 4: Finish with a firm-hold hair spray and the headband.

Pretty In Plaits

Keep things pretty and festive with a ruffled white blouse and pink lips.

Step 1: Prep the hair with a volumizing dry shampoo to get maximum texture from roots to ends.

Step 2: Tease at the crown and gently smooth the top layer.

Step 3: Braid hair to one side, pin any loose ends and spritz with a strong-hold finishing spray.

Step 4: Accessorize with the headband.

Short Story

This look is all about textured hair and a bold red lip. Pair it with a simple silk top in a solid hue.

Step 1: Prep hair with a heat protectant and curl scattered pieces with a 1-inch wand in all directions.

Step 2: Use a texturizing spray to create volume and finish by tousling ends with a light pomade for a lived-in look.

Step 3: Position the headband and spray loose ends in place.

Crimson and Clover by Karla Ticas for Glassbook Magazine

So excited to finally share this editorial we did for Glassbook Magazine.  For this shoot we were really inspired by the latex pieces that our friend Renee had designed. She was in town with her new collection and we just had to get our hands on them.  One thing I really appreciate about  this career is that you get to work along side with all of your friends to create your version of art. There's no right or wrong, there's no rules and regulations, you just do what you feel is good.. And when you get a group of people that all feel the same way, it's the most amazing thing to be a part of.

Hair Talk:  

For our model's hair, I wanted to create sculpted shapes with wet textures.  I wanted it to feel gritty, dirty, and deconstructed.  I created a wet texture with Oribe's Gel Serum, Gold Lust Oil, a generous amount of shine spray, and Glycerin water.  With the texture already apparent, I played with knots and twists and braids, keeping in mind what the silhouette would look like with the tight fitting and structured clothing.
